I hope this post doesn’t turn into anything too preachy. But if you’ve read some of my stuff, you probably know by now that I’m a little bit liberal (and a little bit rock n roll!).
Wait, where are you going? Come back!! *sigh*
Today I was listening to a talk radio program and some man called up and said it was his “God-given right to own a gun.”
His God-given right to own a gun?
I know I heard him right because it was seared onto my brain and I’ve been thinking about it all day. Who the hell would say such a thing?!
I started wondering what the other “God-given rights” were…..Nope, couldn’t come up with anything. God sort of just let us evolve here (C’mon, there aren’t any Republicans left reading this so I can talk about Evolution freely) and we’re free to do what we want. Kind of. I mean, we as humans made laws. That we must abide by. And, oh yeah, let’s not forget about the rules that God actually gave us: The Ten Commandments!
See if you can follow me here:
Commandment #6 = Thou shall not kill.
Gun = projectile-firing weapon.
Weapon = tool (heh) or instrument used in order to inflict damage or harm to living beings.
So why would God tell us not to kill people (see Commandment #6), and then go ahead and give us this RIGHT to own a gun, which in turn will seriously harm, damage or kill someone if we use it properly? It just doesn’t add up for me. Sorry.
I believe it was Jesus H. Christ who once said, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Does this sound like a guy whose father was all “Yay guns!! I can’t wait for everyone to have one. I think Columbine High School will really get a kick out of these”?
No, I don’t think so. So, sorry dude…I don’t think it’s my God-given right (nor yours) to own a gun. I don’t want to own a gun. I don’t have a use for one. I have no desire to harm or KILL another person or an animal. Even if I’m supposedly defending myself or my sprawling property. I shouldn’t be the one deciding who should live and who should die.
I will leave that up to the states with Capital Punishment. Now that is something I can get behind. Yee ha!
P.S. Having said all that, I do have to abide by the Constitution and the whole bit about “right to bear arms.” Yeah yeah. Not really sure THIS is what the founding fathers had in mind, but they wrote it down. So whatever. Just don’t tell me it’s a “God-given right” to own a gun. That smacks of oxymoronism.
